              phrantic phonics

Ideally, phonics should be delivered in several short sessions daily rather than in one block. Detailed lesson plans for 15 minute sessions are available on this site.  If this is not practicable for your class, other suggestions are given below.

30 minute lesson 5 minute filler
1 Alphabet warm-up (1 minute) 1 Alphabet warm-up (1 minute)
2 Letter sounds rap   (1 minute) 2 Blending 100 words (2 minutes)
3 Blending 100 words (2 minutes) 3 Segmenting 100 words (2 minutes)
4 Segmenting 100 words (2 minutes) Equipment
5 New focus sound   (4 minutes) Word list
6 Sight words (2 minutes) Reading cards
7 Handwriting - practising new sounds on whiteboards (10minutes) Timer
8 Spelling game such as Hardspell (8mins) Whiteboards and pens

This is what makes it 'phrantic': the timings are intentionally tight in order to maintain a brisk pace.
